A Memorable Day of Caring

by Gabriel Seminario 3. November 2009 10:20

Having had great memories from my volunteer experience in 2008, I was very excited to offer my support this year for the people who are in need. Volunteer work is a commendable activity, especially in this era in which most people endure great stress because of work and personal activities and have little time to help out others. Fortunately, there is a large group of young people from GenNext who know the importance of helping others! It is because of them that various organizations can benefit from valuable volunteer support.

Five enthusiastic Scotiabankers decided to volunteer at Sunshine Center for Seniors onthe Day of Caring 2009. Early in the morning we met at the Harbourfront dock and we got to know one another while we waited for the boat to take us to Ward’s island, where the senior’s center is located. The weather was fabulous: bright sun, clear skies and a pleasant temperature.

We had the opportunity to learn about all the activities that the seniors usually do during their stay in the center and then we began to work: we helped to clean, sort and store various objects that were part of the outdoor areas, and that had to be protected during the winter. The director of the center was very grateful for our support, mentioning that they depend largely on the help of volunteers.

Personally, it was a great experience to interact with other young professionals from different areas of the Bank and of different nationalities with a common interest in giving a hand and making a difference. At the end of the day, we were all very happy and excited at the possibility of participating in future events.

I invite all who are reading this blog to get informed about the activities of
UnitedWay and GenNext so they can join this noble cause. Without a doubt, it will be an enriching experience that will definitely change your life.
