Happy New Year GenNexters! 2009 is only a few days old and with the new year comes hope, promise, and the potential for great things to come. Last year was hard for a lot of people in our community, and we’re all hoping that this year will bring with it a change for the better.

However, given the tough times both behind us and potentially ahead of us, I’m here to ask for your help.

In September, United Way Toronto set its sights on an important goal: to raise $110 million to support growing needs across our city. But we’re facing a gap: as of today, $106 million has been raised. This speaks to the amazing generosity of Torontonians – even in tough economic times people have dug deep to help those in need around us.

Some might say that $106 million is a lot of money already, but this goal was set knowing what is needed to support our community during tough times. The pressure has never been greater – people need our help after seeing their investments and retirement savings eroded by the financial crisis, facing unemployment, the prospect of losing their homes, and growing family poverty.

If you’ve given to the United Way 2008 Campaign already, I want to say a heartfelt thank you: your support has never been more important.

If you haven’t given yet, or if you haven’t given to United Way before, this is the time we need you.

This is a special appeal to everyone: please support United Way and help the front-line agencies and organizations that meet urgent needs in our community. Please also pass on this message to your friends and family; I’m asking you to help spread this appeal.
