On Saturday, June 13, United Way Toronto's GenNext hosted a day for young Torontonians to show they care about their communities, to demonstrate their commitment to their neighbourhoods and to give something back to Toronto - in short, to show that they GiveADamn.
GiveADamn Day was the brainchild of the GenNext community and the Cabinet’s Agency Engagement Officers, and what an idea it was! Various volunteers scattered throughout the city to participate in activities happening at United Way member agencies throughout Toronto. I was lucky enough to be with the Family Service Association of Toronto at 25 Leonard Ave. This agency provides inexpensive, permanent housing for people who are currently homeless or living in shelters. It serves people who are able to live independently but have been unable to secure affordable housing.
My fellow GenNexters and I participated in preparing and serving the annual Leonard Avenue barbeque - what a feast! There were about 60 residents who came out to participate in the perfect barbeque weather, and we had the opportunity to eat together and learn about life at 25 Leonard. It was an enriching, rewarding experience, and taught me a little bit more about how people live in our great city.
I encourage everyone to sign up for a United Way Day of Caring, to make a connection with your city and to show your fellow Torontonians that YOU GiveADamn.
